近年，西洋菜街與周遭地區的商業活動不斷發展，構成了一個結構緊密的消費群組 (由俗稱「波鞋街」的通菜街至由朗豪坊成功「改造」的砵蘭街)。自03年旺角的西洋菜南街被劃定為行人專用區後，政府進一步將旺角一帶的區域建構成一個消費場所 (現時大部分的行人專用區都被發展成購物區)。同時，這裏亦成為了一個公共空間。公共空間的構成，並不是指實際的空間，而是人的活動成為了空間的主導。起初，經濟活動成了西洋菜街的主要活動，行人路兩旁以及商住兩用的舊式唐樓充斥著不同的商業活動，有的針對本地人，有的針對旅客。而近年間，人的活動在西洋菜南街更見多元化，例如賣藝、論壇、請願等，令西洋菜街成為了香港其中一條混雜的街道。我們的研究就以西洋菜南街 (亞皆老街至登打士街一段)為研究地段，探討西洋菜南街的空間結構與街道的混雜性。
In recent years, business activities develop actively in Sai Yueng Choi Street and the around area. It forms a high density constructed consumer group (from Tung Choi Street to Portland Street). Since Sai Yueng Choi Street South is used as pedestrian district in 2003, Hong Kong government gradually turn Mong Kok area to a consumer field (Nowadays most of the pedestrian districts are developed as shopping area). At the same time, these areas become a public space. When we talk about the public space, it is not only refers to the actual space. Human activities form the space. At the very beginning, economic activities were important in the Sai Yueng Choi Street. There were many different business activities between the two sides of the pedestrian district and the old buildings for residential or commercial used. Some of them are for local people; some of them are for travelers. In recent years, we can see many kinds of human activities in Sai Yueng Choi Street South. For example, there are street performance, forum and petition. These turn the Sai Yueng Choi Street to an intermingle area in Hong Kong. Our research area is in Sai Yueng Choi Street South (from Argyle Street to Dundas Street area). We will probe into the composition of space and the intermingle of street in the Sai Yueng Choi Street South.
