創作背景Background:
研究小組在西洋菜南街進行了三次實地考察後，發現西洋菜街中的混雜性比想像中更見複雜，例如在人的活動上，不同的建築彰顯人不同的活動模式。可是，一般市民大眾對於空間的想像往往流於表面。在一個粗略的訪問中，被訪人士對於西洋菜街的印象莫過於地道、熱鬧、人多……。這種實際活動與想像之間的差異，建立了一個矛盾面，我們的計劃，正正是探討這一方面的問題。
Our research group observes and study 3 times in the Sai Yeung Choi Street, we found that intermingle area is more complicated than that in our mind. The activities of human will be different when they located in different forms of architecture. However, people usually think that the term ‘space’ is just as the place they can see. In a rough interview, an interviewee said that Sai Yeung Choi Street is a local, crowd and noisy place. We can see a contradiction between the actual activities and the imagination. Our project is to investigate on this question.
概念concept:
計劃以西洋菜南街為目標，探討這個混雜城市中人的活動與想像的矛盾面。計劃將試圖代入一些我們對這街道想像以外的元素，以及置換既定的概念，突顯街道的多樣性、混雜性，以及反思現有公共空間的可能性。
The project takes place in Sai Yeung Choi Street South. We are going to investigate the contradiction between the actual activities and the imagination. We try to insert some element besides our imagination and change some fixed concept. We hope to show the multiplicity and complication of the street. We also think about what can be done in the public space nowadays.
初步計劃 initial plan 123 :
1. 「跟蹤行動」: 在第一次的測試中，我們隨意跟蹤街上的行人，研究他們在街上的行動。
‘The follow target activity’: In the first testing, we follow the pedestrian in Sai Yeung Choi Street randomly. We want to investigate their activities in the street.
2. “椅子裝置 The chair installation’:
在街道上放置數張椅子，供行人歇息。組員在旁觀察，並以錄像拍攝及紀錄行人的反應以及行為。
We put some chairs on the street for the pedestrian to take rest. Our group member will observe by side. We will take video to record the behavior and respond of people.
3. 「大廈研究」: 揀選西洋菜街的一楝商住大廈，研究其空間運用的混雜性及不同人士的活動 。
‘Building research’: We choose one residential building in the Sai Yeung Choi Street. We are going to investigate people how to use the complicated space.

落實計劃：裝置展覽及網誌
裝置作品的發展：
Development of the sound installation:
1. 
構思製作一個以八個木箱相連的長方形木箱，箱的表面貼上西洋菜南街的街景，八個箱裏分別放置八種不同的聲音。
We will make eight wooden boxes to form one rectangular wooden box. We still stick the scene of the Sai Yeung Choi Street in to the surface of the boxes. And we will put eight different sound tracks in to the wooden boxes.
2. 
設計改為製作八個獨立的木箱，每個木箱放置不同的聲音，牆身貼上西洋菜南街的平面圖。計劃將木箱裝置於牆上，放置到錄取聲音的地段。木箱將會置於高低不同放置，配合錄取聲音的地方。
We will change our idea to make eight individual wooden boxes. There will be different sound tracks inside the wooden boxes. We will stick the map of the Sai Yueng Choi Street onto the wall. We plan to install the boxes onto the wall and put it onto the location that we record the sound. The boxes will be located to different level in height to match the place we record the sound.
3. 構思以互動形式加入觀眾的參與。計劃在木箱背後的牆壁貼上簡化的街道圖，讓觀眾在牆壁不同的位置上寫上他們對街道的觀感或在街道圖上尋求木箱裏聽到的聲音位置，讓觀者表達他們對西洋菜南街的觀察及感想。
We are thinking of an interactive way to let the audience to participate our art work. We plan to stick a simple map of the Sai Yeung Choi Street behind the wooden boxes on the wall. The audience can write down their feelings to the street on the map. They can also find out the location of the sound we recorded.

關於聲音…
About sound…
平日我們到西洋菜街都是閒逛或購物，我們可以隨意在步行街中行走。其實每天早上十二時前，車輛是可以駛進西洋菜街的。駛進西洋菜街的車輛，多數是工作需要: 搬貨、落貨、送貨…這段錄音正是貨車泊車的聲音。
WE go to the Sai Yeung Choi Street usually for shopping. We can walk in the center of the street as we like. In fact, car is allowed to go into Sai Yeung Choi Street before 12noon. They are usually for working purpose. We can hear a truck parking in this sound track.
在西洋菜街的兩旁，有一些貨車停泊，它們提供不同的服務，大多數都是作商品推廣。這聲音就是電子遊戲的商品推廣活動，歡迎行人到貨車上試玩。
On the two side of the Sai Yeung Choi Street, there are some truck stay there. They provide different service. Most of them are used to promote products. In this sound track we can here the children playing digital games inside the truck.
在嘈雜的西洋菜街中，兩旁很多大厦內都有寧靜的書店。顧客可在寧靜的書店閱讀，與聲音嘈雜的街道形成強烈的對比。
There are some bookshops in the 2nd floor of the noisy Sai Yeung Choi Street. People can read books there. It makes a big contradiction between the street and the bookshop.
在荷里活商業中心內，有一個很少人留意的瀑布。
This is a waterfall inside the Hollywood Commercial Centre.
在西洋菜街一些大厦住宅屋主回家開門時的聲音
Somebody back home and open the door in building located in Sai Yeung Choi Street.
現時數量已剩下不少的雪糕車，於中午時段在西洋菜街售賣雪糕。
An ice-cream van sells ice-cream in Sai Yeung Choi Street in the afternoon.
於銀龍茶餐廳內有一部運送食物的升降機，把煮好的食物由二樓廚房運送至地下給顧客食用。這類升降機在香港已剩下很少了。
There is a lift for food transportation in Silver Dragon restaurant. It can easily take the cooked food from the 2nd floor to the ground floor.
在晚上時段，於西洋菜街有街頭表演。這類表演不用買票進場，很多行人都註足觀賞，令表演藝術普及化。
There are some street performance shows in the Sai Yeung Choi Street at night. We don’t have to buy the ticket to watch the show. It makes performing art popular, many people watch the show on the street.
人們在到西洋菜街多數都是消費，但我們看見有一些乞丐在行乞。
People usually go to Sai Yeung Choi Street for consumption. However, we can see some beggars to beg alms.
在西洋菜街沒有車行駛的時候，行人過路燈的聲音響過不停。
When there’s no car in Sai Yeung Choi Street, the traffic light non-stop to emit sound.
